The 2016 Met Gala Theme Is All About Fashion Tech

The fashion industry must evolve with the times if it is to retain its ability to declare new trends. That is why this coming year’s Met Gala is all about the combination and juxtaposition between fashion and technology. We can’t wait

While in the past there seemed to be no real connection between fashion and technology, it is now obvious that the two industries are in for a mesh. The final seal of approval, assuring designers, retailers and consumers alike that fashion tech is here to stay was given by none other than fashion guru and editor-in-chief of American Vogue Anna Wintour. As a board member of the museum, Wintour is one of the hosts of the prestigious annual Met Gala and the subject she and her cochairmen have chosen for this coming year’s event is all about fashion tech.

The theme for the Costume institute exhibition for 2016 is going to be “X Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology,” which will focus on the dichotomy between handmade haute couture and machine-made fashion, according to Vogue. The exhibition will include over 100 pieces of fashion, several created by traditional techniques of sowing as well as pleating and embroidery. These will be compared to newer design technologies like thermo shaping and laser cutting. Visitors will even be able to watch the creation of these garments in special “in process” workshops.

After seeing fashion designs combined with technology on the runways of Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel Couture as well as Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu, we can hardly wait to see our favorite stars appear at the Met Gala wearing their very own fashion tech inspired gowns. We have a feeling that this event will be like no other.

The Met Gala will take place on May 2nd and will be hosted by Wintour as well as by fellow cochairs Idris Elba, Jonathan Ive and Taylor Swift. Nicolas Ghesquière, Karl Lagerfeld, and Miuccia Prada will serve as honorary chairs.
